Do YOU Want to Write Comics?
No clue how to do something? Join the club! Jan 2025 is a great time to learn some new skills...
"I don't have a clue how to write a comic book, nobody would read it anyway."
Got this message in my inbox today.
My reply:
"Is this something you want to learn how to do?"
That's the real question, right?
Heck, 99.9% of the world has no clue how to write a comic book, and for 99.89% of the world, that's not a problem at all.
There are a MILLION things I have no clue how to do that don't concern me at all.
But if you WANT to make a comic and launch it out into the world, but you have no clue how to do so... that can feel like a huge problem.
This person told me "Yes, I would like to write a comic."
My response:
"That's awesome.
Comic book writing isn't what I personally teach and help creators with, as there are plenty of other amazing writers/teacher out there who do so expertly.
I work with creators once they have something and they're looking to build an audience for it and launch it with crowdfunding.
(That's what ComixLaunch is all about.)
But my top three resources for learning how to get started with writing are:
#1 [FREE] The Bolts & Nuts series of articles by Steve Forbes here: https://www.comixtribe.com/columns/bolts-nuts/pouch-of-nuts/
#2 [CHEAP] This book by Comics Experience's Andy Schmidt https://www.amazon.com/Comics.../dp/1440351848/ref=sr_1_1
#3 [NOT CHEAP, BUT DEEP] The Comics Experience Intro to Writing Class by Paul Allor https://comicsexperience.com/.../introduction-to-writing.../
No one comes out of the womb knowing how to write comics. Everyone who ever wrote a comic was where you are in the journey at some point. So embrace the chance to learn some new skills!
Pick one or more of those resources to start working with and come back to me next month to let me know how it's going!"
In the comments, let me know ONE THING you have no clue about, but are looking to learn in the new year?

P.S. If you have another amazing resource that can help an absolute newbie comic writer get started, I want to hear it!
P.P.S. I also want to shout out Phil Butehorn for his regular comic writer pep talks over on TikTok. Give him a follow!
I recommend Scott Snyder's substack, Our Best Jackett. His breakdown of three act structure makes a lot of sense. https://bestjackettpress.substack.com/
I posted this to my Discord for friends who want to write comics but haven't; it's good stuff!
